The Imminence Of ‘Fake Fish Distribution’

The new Icarus studio album; ‘Fake Fish Distribution’, will be released on Not Applicable on January 30th 6th February 2012 (N.B change of date!). It is their first full studio album since 2005’s ‘I Tweet the Birdy Electric‘ and was composed using parametric techniques, embedded into Ableton Live using the Max for Live add-on, allowing them to mutate the record so that each version that you download will be different from everyone else’s. More on this can be found via their dedicated FFD page and on the STEIM project blog.

It’s been an epic project, with a lot of help from some very helpful people, but it will be something a bit special. A short tour in Europe in January and February is being put together to promote the record. Dates coming shortly … for news on pre-ordering, gigs and more, follow Icarus on Twitter @birdy_electric or sign up to the Not-Applicable mailing list in the sidebar or here (we promise this is ultra-low traffic). In the mean time, here’s a sample of FFD version 500:

Obsolve and Zoetrope

The London Sinfonietta will be performing two newly commissioned short pieces by Isambard Khroustaliov on the 21st October and 5th November entitled Obsolve and Zoetrope. Obsolve is scored for solo percussion with amplification and Zeotrope for quintet (clarinet, violin, horn, ‘cello and flute).

Commissioned as part of the Sinfonietta’s Writing the Future scheme and drawing on previous written work with instrumentalists (documented on the album Ohka), they represent some tentative first steps into the world of contemporary composed music without the use of digital sound processing. The scores for both works are available via the links below.

Obsolve
for solo percussion and amplification – duration: 5 mins

@ Sonic Explorations 2 – Friday 21st October 2011, 8pm, KIngs Place, London.

Zoetrope
for quintet (clarinet, violin, horn, ‘cello and flute) – duration: 7 mins

@ Pavillions 2 – Saturday 5th November 2011, 6pm, Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank, London.

You can also catch a purely digital solo set, reworking of some of the material from both pieces in support of Blurt on the 28th October, details tbc.

Traum @ London’s Open House Independent Film Screenings

Martin Hampton‘s epic film ‘Traum’ will be screened on Saturday & Sunday 17th / 18th September 2011 at 13:00 as part of the Independent Film Screenings for London Open House weekend @ Trinity Buoy Wharf in London.

The film, which depicts the demise of the landscape surrounding the Lea Valley shortly before its compulsory acquisition for the London Olympics, is a chilling portrait of how easily despondency and despair can set in when communities are faced with such large scale turmoil and uncertainly.
